Stretching before a workout can feel helpful, but it isn’t a guarantee against injury. A more useful approach is a brief warm-up with light, dynamic movements that match what you’re about to do. Longer-term habits like assistance training may matter more than warm-ups according to experts. For example, separate strength-training and static-stretching sessions done outside your main workout to gradually build the strength and flexibility your activity depends on.
