According to a large review of studies published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, regular physical activity can reduce depression symptoms at levels similar to psychological therapy. Exercise also appeared to offer benefits comparable to antidepressants, though the evidence there was less certain. Light to moderate activity done consistently over multiple sessions seemed to work best and came with relatively few side effects. It’s not a replacement for professional care when needed, but it can be a practical and accessible tool for many people.
