After recent attention on Tylenol, medical experts say acetaminophen should be used thoughtfully during pregnancy, especially for minor, low-grade fevers. At the same time, they stress that it remains the safest over-the-counter choice for treating pain and fever in pregnant patients. Although researchers have explored a possible connection between acetaminophen use and autism for years, the evidence is still inconclusive, according to a new FDA warning sent to physicians. Experts therefore continue to recommend careful, limited use when clinically needed.
