A growing body of research suggests that emulsifiers, which are additives used to improve texture and shelf life in foods like ice cream, salad dressings, and baked goods, may negatively impact gut health. These substances can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria and promote inflammation, potentially contributing to digestive issues and chronic diseases. A 2023 study published in The BMJ found that consuming several types of emulsifiers was also linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Experts recommend limiting highly processed foods to support a healthier gut microbiome.
