Gabapentin, often used as a safer alternative to opioids for low back pain, may be linked to a slightly higher risk of dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A recent study in Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine found that gabapentin use was associated with cognitive issues within 10 years, with more frequent use linked to a higher risk. While gabapentin can be effective for pain relief, itβs important to discuss potential cognitive effects with your healthcare provider and monitor memory over time.
