Frequent yawning throughout the day may be more than just a sign of boredom, it can be a warning sign of significant sleep deprivation. Experts say excessive yawning is often a physical sign that the body is struggling to stay alert, with one-third of U.S. adults reporting symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness. This sleep deficit can increase the risk of drowsy driving, workplace errors, and long-term health problems. Regularly getting less than seven to eight hours of quality sleep has been linked to many chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, depression, obesity, and stroke.
