Toxic chemicals in children’s mattresses raise health concerns

A recent study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology found that mattresses used by babies and young children can emit harmful chemicals, including flame retardants and phthalates, while they sleep. These substances have been linked to hormonal imbalances as well as disruptions in reproductive, developmental, and nervous system function in toddlers. Experts stress the need for stronger safety standards and urge manufacturers to remove unnecessary chemicals and move toward truly non-toxic products. To reduce exposure, parents are advised to choose low-emission materials, ensure good ventilation, and wash bedding and sleepwear regularly.
