What consumers should know about strawberries and pesticides exposure

A consumer watchdog report found that some conventional strawberries contained residues from as many as 12 pesticides, including chemicals linked to long-term environmental concerns. But the findings are not as simple as the headlines suggest: the detected levels appear to be within U.S. federal limits set by the EPA, meaning detection alone does not necessarily equal danger. Since strawberries frequently appear near the top of the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list, families who eat them often, especially those with young children, may choose organic strawberries as a practical way to lower pesticide exposure.
