Sterile mosquito release proposed to fight disease-carrying insects

Google has asked the U.S. government for permission to release 32 million sterile male mosquitoes in parts of California and Florida as part of a large-scale effort to reduce disease-spreading mosquito populations. The plan involves releasing male mosquitoes that cannot produce viable offspring, allowing them to mate with wild females and gradually lower the number of mosquitoes in targeted areas. Supporters say the approach could help control insects that spread illnesses while reducing reliance on chemical pesticides. If approved, the project would represent another step toward using biotechnology and precision pest control to manage public health risks.
