Researchers have found evidence that a virus may play a role in the development of one of the most common cancers. The virus, called beta-HPV, was previously thought to contribute to skin cancer only in rare cases by making UV damage worse. A new study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, suggests it might also be able to influence cells in a way that promotes cancer growth. While more research is needed, the finding could help improve our understanding of how this cancer develops.
