New report flags lead in many protein powders and shakes

An analysis by Consumer Reports found that many popular protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes contain concerning amounts of lead. In testing of 23 products, more than two-thirds had lead levels above CR’s daily level of concern (0.5 micrograms per serving), with plant-based options tending to show higher readings. Some products also contained other heavy metals like cadmium and arsenic. Unlike prescription or OTC drugs, supplements like protein powders aren’t FDA-reviewed or routinely tested before sale, so safety largely depends on manufacturers and third-party testing.
