Meta faces court claims over children’s social media use

Meta is facing a major court case over accusations that Facebook and Instagram were designed in ways that encouraged children and teenagers to become heavily dependent on the platforms. The company disputes claims that it knowingly used algorithms, notifications, and other engagement features to encourage young users to spend excessive amounts of time on its apps. Meta says it has introduced a range of protections for minors, including parental supervision tools, privacy settings, age-based restrictions, and limits on certain types of content. The case adds to growing scrutiny of social media companies over their responsibility for the effects their platforms may have on children’s mental health and well-being.
