In a groundbreaking move to combat the spread of diseases like dengue and Zika, genetically modified mosquitoes have been released in the United States for the first time. Developed by biotech company Oxitec, these mosquitoes are engineered to reduce wild populations by passing on a gene that prevents female offspring from surviving. The experimental release marks a significant step in using genetic technology for public health.
