Cyclosporiasis is a foodborne intestinal infection caused by a parasite, which is commonly transmitted through contaminated fresh produce. A Stanford Medicine expert explains that the illness can cause severe watery diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, abdominal discomfort, dehydration, and weight loss. Symptoms may appear several days after exposure and can continue without treatment, but the infection is usually treatable with antibiotics and fluid replacement. Washing produce carefully and cooking it when possible may help reduce the risk of infection.
