The mindset that helps children take charge of their future

One of the most valuable qualities children can develop is an internal locus of control, the belief that their choices, effort, and actions can meaningfully influence what happens in their lives. Children who develop this mindset are more likely to take responsibility, persist through setbacks, solve problems independently, and feel capable of shaping their own future. Rather than seeing success or failure as something determined entirely by luck, circumstances, or other people, they learn to focus on what they can control. Encouraging this sense of agency can help build resilience, confidence, motivation, and greater independence as children grow.
