Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding items due to a perceived need to save them. This often results in excessive clutter, impacting living spaces and daily routines. The condition ranges from mild to severe and typically starts in adolescence. It is distinct from collecting, where people carefully organize and display specific items. Unlike collecting, hoarding disorder leads to distress and problems functioning.
