FDA considers ban on prescription fluoride supplements

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration plans to move forward with a proposal to ban prescription fluoride supplements, raising concern among dentists and public health experts. These products have long been used to prevent cavities in children without access to fluoridated water. The proposal follows a recent NIH toxicology review suggesting that higher fluoride exposure may be linked to lower IQ in children, a key argument for supporters of the ban. Experts on both sides agree more research is needed, but critics warn that restricting access could harm vulnerable communities with limited dental care options.
